How to check if a row exists in an ORACLLE database?

I am using SQL-links & Oracle
and would like to check for the existance
of a row in the database. I can do it
using
 SELECT COUNT(*)
 FROM TBL
 WHERE COL1='5'
but this can be quite slow. The problem
arrises when the set is empty...using
the TQuery component and the Open method
I get an error "method not applicable"...

Any suggestions ?
