this entire thread is clearly visible on my ISP's news server.  Give
totally objects a break - they provide a good service as a benefit to
the Smalltalk community.  I applaud them!

All appearing here.
We have our own news host connected to JANET
(Joint Academic Network).  If we're getting it,
then it's coming into the whole of internet in
UK.

This rudeness is getting tiresome.

It should be obvious to you by now that some newsservers outside control
of T.O. block or miss postings from T.O.
Complain at those servers' providers, they are 'disrupting integrity of
the news-groups', not T.O.

Grow up.

 I am not visible!!!!!
I am staying out of the arguments and trying to understand what is going on.
My original counts on message receipts showed that our server consistently
had more posts than the British Telecom one. Some of my investigations
indicate that this is not just because BT are missing those from TO but that
BT doesn't get everything from elsewhere either. Others are clearly making
the point that TO posts are being seen over a wide range of servers but not
on some. My current investigations are indicating that TO posts are not
alone in this.

However, it is important that we check all avenues so I am currently waiting
until I get an answer from our main news feed providers who are currently
looking at their set ups.

I have two gut feelings at the moment.

One is that it is worth sorting this out so that everyone knows what is
possible with Usenet and what is not. As it is a peer to peer operation with
every server choosing their feeds individually and total anarchy out there,
there seems to be some indications that the system might be too complex for
a group that demands a perfect feed everywhere (or at least some of the
contributors seem inclined that way). It maybe that the system can feed
alt.binaries.{*filter*}.something_or_other because no one cares if a message is
missed but not cls where most people want to get everything. This may not be
possible in which case we would want everyone to understand where we sit and
what we CAN do, which is not necessarily what they want.

Secondly, I am coming close to believing that we should not even be
bothering. We are not in business as a news delivery company. Goodness knows
it is hard enough for us to get enough Smalltalk work here in the UK without
splitting our time worrying about these issues. I realise that Ilias
would agree and tell us to stop bothering. If we can't
get some sense out of this soon and maybe get everyone off our backs then
there will be a good case for stopping the server. Maybe it becomes your
call in the end.

Just my current thoughts at 11 pm and maybe I will feel more upbeat
tomorrow.

Regards to all.

I don't think it's so simple.  Why would Google block or miss postings
from T.O.?  I think there's something wrong on both sides.

I gather T.O. is an unsecured server, which does not require a password or
any other authentification from posters. This makes it suitable for
injecting anonymous spam/libel into the Usenet system. Perhaps at least
some other servers are blocking T.O. for that reason. If so, I don't
really blame them.

-- personally, I would find this very interesting, based on your
discussions thus far.  I and others would learn something.

-- I think it is absolutely *your* call.  We the Smalltalk community
certainly appreciate what you have provided for us, for free.  But you
don't see me doing it, for example - like yourself, I have bills to
pay; unlike yourself, I don't set aside time to help the Smalltalk
community in significant ways.  So if, for whatever reason, it makes
sense to you to stop the server, stop it; this wasn't your first
contribution to the community and (somehow I suspect ;-) it won't be
your last.

Stuff like the news server, and joining James and Eric and a few
others to continue to flaunt Smalltalk when no-one else would ... this
has, in my mind at least, placed Totally Objects in the front tier (~5
firms) of Smalltalk-oriented consulting firms.  So if you're ever
regretting the help you've given the Smalltalk gang, think about that.

Cheers,
Paul
