 Smalltalk on PCs and Macs

My father is currently using a large, custom written control program
he wrote in Hypercard to handle a significant number of automated tasks.
This program has grown old and large, and he is considering a complete
rewrite in the next few years (at the latest).

I've suggested looking at a Smalltalk system to handle this task.
Although he currently uses Macs for all his work, he would consider a shift
to PCs for control system purposes, so this question is for both mac and pc
systems.

What are the currently available smalltalk systems out there?  What
are their system requirements?  What GUI building capabilites do they
posess?  What OSs?  And last (but still critical), how good are they at
communicating through the serial port?
