visual works 3.1 image has segmentation fault on 2.4 kernel (red hat 8.0)
We just set up a new server and tried to use red hat 8.0, but the
image crashes (it reports segmenation fault) for no reason soon after
the image runs (it runs for a few minutes)

Linux pub99.ezboard.com 2.4.18-14smp #1 SMP Wed Sep 4 12:34:47 EDT
2002 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

We are ezboard.com, and have been using VW 3.1 for the last few years
to run our ASP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Which 3.1 rev VM?  It may be the case that the 3.1 VM is incompatible
with the rev of glibc on that platform

We run VW 3.1d on Linux, supporting RedHat. Our own testing on RH8 didn't
show any problems, and we've not had any reports of problems from users (I'd
guess around a hundred on that platform). VW earlier than 3.1d will seg
fault on any reasonably new Linux (our first problems were with Suse 7.1, I
think RH 7.1 was the first RH affected). The problem was insufficient stack
headroom, since glibc2.2 required much more. Java had similar problems.

visual works 3.1 image has segmentation fault on 2.4 kernel (red hat 8.0)
UPDATE 12/20/02 2:38 PM PST

I was able to contact a Cincom tech support person who said that
basically no VisualWorks (even the latest 7.0) is supported on RH 8.0.

However...

Steven Kelly is obviously using vw 3.1d with RH 8.0 and not having
problems.

On our newly created RH 8.0 box, running 3.1, it seems to crash after
a minute about 80% of the time (segmentation faults).

Linux pub99.ezboard.com 2.4.18-14smp #1 SMP Wed Sep 4 12:34:47 EDT
2002 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

notice it is kernel version 2.4.18

on another box (which works)

Linux pub98.ezboard.com 2.4.18-3 #1 Thu Apr 18 07:37:53 EDT 2002 i686
unknown

little different, but still a 2.4.18 kernel.

dunno if this helps anyone.

our image is a headless image that does not require X windows.  We
start the image by executing the following:

./visual ezboard.im &

our application is a basically a custom web server (we have about 150
servers doing this).  they all start up fine... its just this one RH
8.0 box.

Yeah. I used to do support for Cincom. We have to say that sort of thing.

OK, you don't tell us which 3.1 engine you are running. 3.1d and 3.1c are
available for download at a couple of places on the net. Have you tried
3.1d?
