If you do get this book make sure you get Smalltalk Express so you can do the exercises. If your looking for a book to teach you Object Oriented concepts including a little bit about patterns Smalltalk, Objects and Design by Chamond Liu is very good. Finally if you wish to learn about patterns, Best Practice Patterns by Kent Beck is very good. I am also a newbie to Smalltalk and these books have all been very useful.

It probably comes with a floppy diskette too.
