Pong from Inside Smalltalk is SLOW under Squeak

Hi.

I have the Pong game from Inside Smalltalk Vol 1 working. I
run it on Squeak and a P166 with 64 Mb ram.  I know it is a
little slow because of Squeak, but I wonder how "quick" it was
back in 90 or so, when it was first coded by LaLonde and Pugh. I
think it is pretty cool, and teaches alot of stuff, but back then, a
P166 and 64MB would have been cutting edge hardware. I guess
I should try to do it in VW3.0 and see how it goes. What would
the platform of choice, hardware/software been for Smalltalk-80
been in 89/90?
                                               Thanks,
                                               Robert

P.S. Anybody want the Squeak version?

At that time, Objectworks (the father of VisualWorks) must have been
the most popular Smalltalk.  80286 processor should have been the
"standard" CPU back then...

Well, let's see:  in 1988 I bought the fastest system I could get, a 20 MHz
386 (with a whopping 4 megs of memory! :-).  In 1990 the first 486's might
have been available (25 MHz?), but I didn't get a 486 until '91, when I got
a 33 MHz screamer.  So I'd guess that in the 1989/1990 timeframe the typical
Intel-based machine would have been an 80386 of some variety.
