problem reading 4-byte reals from binary file

I have a data set in a binary file which was created from a fortran program. The data are 4-byte
real values. I have been trying to read the values from TP7 into a variable declared as a single,.
The problem is that the program runs, but the values do not make sense. Is it possible that
FORTRAN REALS are not in the same binary format as TP singeles?

TIA, R.D. Moore
