Let me do some self promotion:

You will find a complete VESA unit for 256 colors and several
resolution theres. It includes mouse support, and a lot more.

Best regards,

Download my GrafX 1.4 - supports up to Hicolor at every resolution your
card supports.

You're a candidate for the hardware-acceleration my unit has. Well, try
it out! It's worth it!

I have just tried Dejong's VESA256 unit, and unfortunately, the demo1 progrm
gives the message
your video card does not support VESA640X480.

Teh video card in question is an ATI Mach32 with 2 mb memory, in a 486 dx2-66.

Any comments?

Try loading a VESA driver like UNIVESA (bundled with many older games like
SC2000). The VESA implementation may be buggy!
If that doesn't work, Dejong's VESA256 may be worng programmed and can't
work with your SVGA. Then, d/l any other GrafX unit!

This is a simple routine on how to get into VESA modes, these modes require you have VESA support on your card or through an external (TSR) program such as UNIVBE.

Asm
     mov ax, $4f02; {Tell AX, that the VESA Extension will be added}
     mov bx, $101;  {Add Vesa 1.0 or Higher  (640*480*256), requires card support for
                     Vesa 1.0 or 2.0 or UniVBE}
     int $10;      {Will, you should reconize that.}
end;

The $101 is the mode command for (640*480*256), but this can be increased, all that matters is if your card supports it..
If I'm correct, I think $103 is for 800*600*256, but if not try around this area.
