ANNOUNCEMENT: Automatic Design of Algorithms Through Evolution (ADATE), Version 0.3

ADATE is a system for automatic functional programming described in
the March 1995 issue of Artificial Intelligence. The long-term goal of
the ADATE system is the development of the very first artificial and
general intelligence, for example in the form of a purely functional
program that can analyze and synthesize general English sentences well
enough to pass the Turing test. Since such a program seems almost impossible
to write "by hand", it may be a better alternative to let a computer write
it.

Version 0.3 offers the following novelties in comparison with version 0.2:

- Easy definition of new algebraic data types that are analogous to
  context-free grammars.

- Easy definition of auxiliary functions.

- More sophisticated population diversification techniques to avoid local
  optima.

- An embedded ML compiler that emits machine code optimized for PentiumPro
  CPUs.

- Somewhat improved program transformations.

- Persistency i.e., the ability to save a population of programs to a file.

The system is still a prototype intended for research in combinatorial
search and induction. The run times are too long to make it practically
useful. Fortunately, the long run times seem to depend more on a small
number of constant factors than on one single exponential, combinatorial
explosion.

Currently, version 0.3 is only available for LINUX, but a Windows 95/NT
version will follow in a few weeks. Please see
