EuroForth'97 Conference on Embedded Communications
September 26-28 1997

Last posting before the conference
==================================
If you want a room in college, please register now as we have exceeded
our provisional allocation of rooms.

Papers are being presented on the conference theme itself, including
a TCP/IP stack in Forth, Interbus-S with the IX1 protocol processor
(stack machine), and distributed data acquisition with CAN. Other
emerging themes for this year include safety critical systems and
source management and certification.

Several systems not previously seen at EuroForth will be presented,
including a Forth completely written in Java, and DSSP, a Forth-like
language from Russia. A demonstration session has been arranged so
that everyone will be able to present their systems. If you would
like to demonstrate your system, please contact the organisers so
that we can arrange space and power.

Introduction
============
EuroForth, the annual European Forth Conference, is being held in
the beautiful setting of St Annes College, Oxford. The conference
focuses on the increasing use of communications within applications,
ranging from embedded controllers connected to the outside world
through modems, to Internet payment engines delivering secure cash
transfers from domestic PCs, and including the process control
environment which connects peripherals as diverse as door access
controllers, mass spectrometers, commercial laundry controllers,
walking robots to management systems.

EuroForth is a friendly conference at which time is made available
for meeting people, for informal discussions, and for contacts.

Proceedings
===========
These will be published at the conference and be available immediately
after from the Conference Organiser, and other sources of Forth
literature. They will also be published by the Forth Interest Group.
There is a refereed section of the proceedings for those who desire
peer review of their work.

Exhibitions and Demonstrations
==============================
The conference will include an exhibition area for vendors and displays,
which will include all major vendors of Forth tools for embedded PC
applications, the latest developments in portable software, and table
space for demonstrations by conference delegates.

The fee for exhibition space will be 25.00 pounds for poster only
display, 50.00 for a display with computers. Students will not be
charged for this space. The money earned from this will be put towards
sponsoring a student or visitor from the former Soviet Union.

Location and accommodation
==========================
EuroForth'97 is being held in the lovely setting of St Annes College
Oxford. St Annes was founded in 1879 and was the first Oxford
institution to offer University education to women.  In 1979 it
opened its doors to men as well.

This college is within easy walking distance of the city centre yet
is free from the crowds of central Oxford.  It is between Banbury
Road and Woodstock Road, is opposite the University Park and close
to the River Cherwell.

The conference takes place in the Mary Ogilvie Theatre, one of the
newest buildings on the college site.  The accommodation will be in
the Claire Palley building which is also new and contains 70 ensuite
study bedrooms.

Some of the wonderful sites you can visit in Oxford include:
  Historic Oxford Colleges
  Magdalen Bridge
  Old and New Bodleian Libraries
  University and Pitt Rivers Museum
  Sheldonian Theatre
  Ashmolean Museum
  Blenheim Palace
  Botanic Garden
  Blackwells, the famous Oxford bookshop

Conference Social Activities
============================
Friday night will be casual. We will go punting on the River Cherwell
and enjoy the tranquillity of Oxford.

Saturday night will be more formal with an elegant dinner held in the
ancient setting of St Edmund Hall the existence of which was recorded
from the 14th century onwards.

On Sunday night there will be arrangements for those staying over until
Monday, including a survivors pub party.
