Minutes of the October meeting of the Colorado Eiffel User's Group

The October meeting began with a series of demonstrations of software
written in Eiffel.

Steve Thompson demonstrated his Eiffel utility to process C header
files and generate Eiffel wrappers. Written with the Gobo tools gelex
and geyacc, Steve is extending his utility to work with C++ and
possibly python and other languages.

Greg Compestine demonstrated his Perlish library, or as he likes to
call it, his example of infix operator abuse. He also demonstrated the
game Strategic Combat, a WW II strategy game written entirely in
Eiffel. The game has been well received by the {*filter*} community, has
had high reviews, and is noted for it's performance, stability and
reliability.

The members then discussed alternatives for developing an Open Source
project. After some discussion, it was agreed that developing an
Eiffel library wrapper had several positive attributes, namely:
    * It gives to the Eiffel programmer community
    * There is a track record of success by other teams for
      developing wrapper projects
    * The project is well-defined and low risk
    * A wrapper project should subdivide well
    * It still provides challenges and learning opportunities

While the majority of development will take place using ISE Eiffel,
the team considers maintaining compatibility with the GNU Eiffel
compiler and with multiple operating systems to be highly desirable.

The group decided to investigate the SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer).
There already exists one Eiffel wrapper for SDL (JEGL), but it does
not appear to be actively maintained. Regardless, the CEUG could
participate in, or build on the JEGL effort, or set up an independent
project.

Steve Thompson offered to investigate setting up a SourceForge project
for the CEUG, along with the current status of the JEGL project.

Rex Fowler stated that he'd set up a Linux box at his office, Fowler
Software Design, making it available as a resource to the project.

Also mentioned was the Eiffel Class Struggle. In the past, this was an
annual contest for Open Source Eiffel libraries. Anyone interested in
volunteering to organize a 2003 Struggle should contact The Eiffel
NICE organization at http//www.eiffel-nice.org, or join one of their
mail lists:

The next meeting of the CEUG will the the holiday party on December
13th.
