 Public domain Eiffel-3 front-end available

A compiler front-end for Eiffel-3 is available. It has been generated
automatically with the Karlsruhe toolbox for compiler construction
according to the most recent public language definition. The parser
derives an easy-to-use abstract syntax tree, supports elementary error
recovery and provides a precise source code indication of errors. It
performs a strict syntax check and analyses 4000 lines of source code per
second on a Sun-SPARC workstation.

Report, including an abstract syntax for Eiffel-3:

  B. Groeber and O. Langmack, "A Compiler Front-End for Eiffel-3",
Report B-92-25, FU Berlin, December 1992.

For a physical copy of the report send surface or electronic mail (don't
forget your address) to:

  Inge Hellmich
  "Report B-92-25"
  FU Informatik
  Nestorstr. 8-9
  W-1000 Berlin 31
  Germany

The corresponding archive file is available via anonymous file transfer at:

  ftp.fu-berlin.de:/pub/heron/ep.tar.Z

(The server may be difficult to access from countries outside Europe.
Therefore the location of the archive file may change. Such a change will
be announced here.)

Comments are welcome. Enjoy,
Burghardt Groeber, Olaf Langmack.

Sorry for the inconvenience in trying to access "ep"!

There's an additional site where you can get it via anonymous file
transfer, you may give it a try:

Host:           ftp.zrz.TU-Berlin.DE [130.149.4.50]
Directory:      ~ftp/pub/unix/lang/eiffel
Files:          README
                ep.tar.Z

Within some days - hopefully before christmas - we hope to have it at
other sites and in the US as well.

If you can't wait until then and don't get it from the sites mentioned
above, we'll send it to you on request as sequence of small uuencoded
files.

Thanks to P. Henderson it runs on HP-800 series. (contact:

The next version, which we plan to release by end of March 1993, will
support MS-DOS as well. Suggestions for improvements resulting from
practical experience are welcome!

Thanks for your interest,

Is anyone thinking about porting Eiffel to OS/2 version 2 (32-bit)?
--

[Doesn't the ISE Eiffel compiler actually turn it into C?  I'd think that
porting it to OS/2 should be straightforward. -John]

Thanks to R. Phillips, the public domain front-end 'ep' now runs on UNIX
System V Version 3.2 (AT&T) as well.  The shell-script (bourne) to install
his changes in the 'ep' source directory is available on request at the
mail address below.

Thanks to R. Phillips, the public domain front-end 'ep' now runs on UNIX
System V Version 3.2 (AT&T) as well.  [send e-mail for details]

And if anyone's interested, although it doesn't specifically mention it in
the documentation, the 'ep' package compiles without modification under
HP-UX 8 running on an HP-720 (using the SUN target in the makefile).
