 Select - SQL gives inconsistent results

I am trying to do a select as follows:

"select A.1, A.2, A.3 from A, B where B.4 = {var} and A.1 = B.1 into ..."

The field # 1 in A and B are identical in type and length
Field # 1 in B can appear multiple times for a single field # 4.
Field # 1 in A can appear multiple times.

The results of the query with specific info should find five occurrences of field #1 in B
resulting in 8 records in the final result.

This query omits only ONE of the five occurrences in B if I use the form:

                        and alltrim(A.1) == alltrim(B.1)

Any other combination of equal signs or an alltrim on only one side of the equation
results in the correct answer.
