select count(*) from test_file where id>100 and id<1000
Compilation error?  Again, the '<' should be doubled.

In any case, the query itself should compute a count of all those records
where id is between 100 and 1000, exclusive.  Depending on the definition of
test_file, you may also be able to return this value to your Clarion
application.
