 Counting non-deleted records in a Clipper/dBase file

Greetings.....
The CW20 user guide states:

"When the (Clipper/dBASE) driver deletes a record from a (Clipper/dBASE)
database, the record is not physically removed, instead the driver marks
it as inactive."
.....
"To remove records permanently, execute a PACK(file)."
.....
"Because the DELETE statement does not physically remove records, the
number of records reported by the RECORDS() function includes inactive
records."

I'm looking for a routine that counts the number of active records that
does not use the PACK command.

Any ideas?

TIA,
