Is it because we don't know how to set up our
newsreader to do otherwise ?

Because it would be a good thing if some people actually _read_ the
thing.
Besides, who's forcing you?

No.

Oh, btw: stop astroturfing.

Don't tell me you missed that whole thread... most people felt it
was good getting the FAQ posted. The alternative was posting a
series of URLs, personally I feel that'd be less helpful.

Anyway, the reason the FAQ's so big is just because people have
so many questions about C :) And you could always mark it as
read, and not download it - surely downloading a header's not
such a big deal as all that?

Cheers,
Dave.

I'm just downloading the headers :-)

No, please no. I hate having to load up my horrible browser.
Download headers, and only read what you chose to read?

(a) Nobody is forcing you to download anything.
(b) It is traditional on Usenet to post newsgroup FAQs to the newsgroup
to which they pertain.
(c) We had a discussion *very recently* on whether Steve should post
URLs in future. In fact, the discussion was so recent that I'm surprised
you didn't see it.

The consensus emerging from the discussion was that Steve should
continue to post the whole thing. FWIW I argued for the URL replacement;
but the consensus of the group is that FAQs should be posted here in
their entirety, and it's neither my right nor yours to override that
consensus (although you are free to disagree with it, just as I am (and
do)). If you want the reasoning for posting the FAQs here, check
Google's recent archives for that discussion.

When you click the thread, it loads the entire page in
many news readers.  Personally, i have plenty of bandwidth
but i know a lot of people don't.

Yep apparently i did miss the thread. I only recently
started viewing comp.lang.c and _yes_ i did already
read the FAQ...on a web site.

If the majority of people think posting it is a good idea
then so be it, sorry i missed the conversation.

Actually my newsreader downloads the entire post.

But any decent newsreader allows you to cancel such downloads in
midstride easily.
