 VB4.0 - 16 bit ver for Win 3.11 ???????
Does anyone know if VB4.0 will have a 16 bit version that can run under Win 3.11. I don't really want to go to Win 95 yet (or when it's released). As I understand it, I will have to shell out 90 bucks for Win 95, then 200 plus bucks for M'soft Office, then........, then ......., etc adding up to BIG bucks. _____________________________________________________ "Keep an Open Mind and People will throw in Garbage"

You only need to buy office/95 if you want long filename support. The rest is the same or even slower than the 16 bit verison, from what PC Mag. says. Who knows if Microsoft will sell VB4/16. I don't plan to get office again until they enhance it some more by actually USING the features of Win/95 like multitasking (do spell checks in the background, for instance). Long filename support and new looks is not quite enough for me to spend $200+. I DO plan to get Win/95 and Delphi/95 so that I can enjoy 32bit programming (in a flat memory space). Not sure if I will get VB4 though... Regards, Don.

.. I thought there were 2 versions of VB 4 - 16 and 32 bit. Rumours suggest that MS have almost completed the 16 bit, but are having big problems with the 32 bit version:) Regards, Chris Willetts

I just got the Office'95 preview and spell-checking is done as you type (unrecognised words are underlined in red). ----------------------------------------------

I believe that they are both packaged in the same package. I could be wrong though. Maybe there will be those who will be developing on 16 bit platforms after the release of Win95. You can't get a 16 bit version of VC++ by itself. It comes with VC++ 2.0. Maybe they are going to use that strategy with VB 4.0???? Tom

Sure it will According to A demo/sampler cd for Microsoft Windows 95, VB 4.0 will Compile 16 bit apps for Windows, and it will also take advantage of compiling 32 bit apps for Windows NT and Windows 95, It's multiplatform! So you can run it on Windows 3.x As for Microsoft Office, I believe Windows 95 will also run just about any Win16 (windows 3.x) program that you already have... Although I think that anybody interested in buying Win 95 should maybe wait for a friend or somebody they know to buy Win 95 so they might find out how it runs different applications (especially existing Dos programs.) and if there are any more bugs in it..

I have (not at home) Microsoft office running on Win95, Doom ][ runs nicely networked in DOS boxes. I've had one VB program that uses the MCI control not work -- but it worked even less on that particualr computer under 3.11 Win95 does a nice conversion job on VB progs, but 3D command buttons will need to have their border removed (so they look like 95 buttons, not 3.x) -- I've got more important things to do than a {*filter*}y .sig file, alright?! The issue is not whether the generated .EXE's will run under Windows 3.*, but whether the DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT will run under Windows 3.*. This would required a 16-bit version of the development environment, or that the 32-bit version work with WIN32S. - Some beta-testers seem to imply a 16-bit development environment exists, but will it ship in the same box as the main product? -- Rick -- (Rick Rutt is a system architect living and working in Midland, Michigan.)

Confirmed... At least it worked that way in an early beta... Two versions: One pure 16 bit, and one 32 bit, with separate installation programs. (and installing the 32-bit version totaly {*filter*}ed up your existing dev. setup) :( Dag Sunde

It does. So far, it works just as well for me as 3.0. Eric

In addition, there are "binders", the enhanced win95 style "shortcut bar" and it seems to run faster for me. In addition to all that, office 95 uses all of the UI features of 95 correctly, including "scraps" and all the other hyper cool 95'isms. Also, word can be told to insinuate itself into the "inbox" as the text editor for email usage. Actually - the upgrade is very very nice. With the exception of threads I am quite happy. =================================================== Xanadu Enterprises Inc./Data Alchemists

The rumour I heard (from a reliable source) is that when VB 4.0 ships next month, it will be 16 bit only. Rumblings from the inside seem to indicate that the 32 bit version is not stable enough for release. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Brad Clarke, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------

Arie: The Win16 version of VB4 will make Win16 API calls. The Win32 version will not. Regards, jlb
