Subscribe to MSDN or buy Visual Studio upgrade?
I'm sorry if this isn't the ideal group to post such a question, but I figured maybe a few people here have faced the same delima... I'm thinking of upgrading from VB6 Pro to Visual Studio.NET. However, it looks like buying MSDN Professional is in some ways a better value as I'll get everything in VS.NET plus other goodies to learn/experiment/develop for. Anyone here opt for MSDN instead of VS.NET? Cheers

I hear that vb.net is totally different than vb6. You will have to learn everything in a new 'method'. If you're planning on stepping over to vb.net, then I have no experience of that kind to give you any advice. If you're referring to the MSDN cds for vb6, then I recommend that over subscribing to MSDN on the internet. Basicly because you can access the cds with more ease and it's a one-time payment (or none at all). Regards, Paul

An msdn subscription does give you more, for sure, especially the developers edition or better. (The universal subscription provides enough CDs for all the coasters and mobiles you could ever want!) If you've got the bucks .. go for the msdn. -- Randy Birch MVP Visual Basic http://www.mvps.org/vbnet/ Please respond only to the newsgroups so all can benefit.

Randy Birch wrote > The universal subscription provides > enough CDs for all the coasters and > mobiles you could ever want!) Er, Randy, I think you got the name wrong. Isn't that the Intergalactic Subscription? :-) I can't imagine a single individual possibly being competent in all the disparate products included in that package. > If you've got the bucks .. go for > the msdn. How much is it, now, in United Planets Credits? There are a mess of apps in that package, that's for sure. But if you're a serious corporate developer making wide use of ms technologies and need development versions of backoffice, NT, transaction and commerce servers, dev and productivity tools the universal package certainly make a compelling purchase considering the individual costs of the development products needed. -- Randy Birch MVP Visual Basic http://www.mvps.org/vbnet/ Please respond only to the newsgroups so all can benefit.

I did subcontract work for a fellow who subscribed, but even with four of us on the development team, and even so, we didn't come close to using all the products in the package. Even so, he considered it a bargain, considering just the cost of the Windows 2000 Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio Enterprise, and Office. I had my own Office Developer on my notebook, but did use the server development databases he set up on the server machine. (Well, I confess, I had my own Visual Studio Enterprise, too, but wasn't using it on those projects. I was doing Access clients and some server database Views.) -- Larry Linson http://www.ntpcug.org -- North Texas PC User Group http://members.tripod.com/ntaccess -- Access SIG http://members.tripod.com/accdevel -- Access Samples and Examples
