VB5 Learning- Background color stays black?

VB5 Learning- Background color stays black?

I'm learning Visual Basic 5.0 and have run into a problem.
When we started the first program, the background color
for FORM 1, was gray. After running Visual Basic a few
times, whenever I started a new form the background would
be black with gray dots for the grid. I have tried to change the
black to another color by changing the forecolor and backcolor
properties, but when I got it to look right in the programming window
(backcolor black, forecolor gray), when the program was run, the
background of the form was black. If I change the colors so that
they look right in the running program, in the programming window
I can't see the grid lines because they are the same color as the rest
of the background, so, I  need help. Is this normal or can it be fixed?

The dots don't appear when you run they program.  They appear at design
time only.

I have encountered the same problem before.  Usually it fixes itself
if I restart the computer but once I had to re-install VB5
