FWIW there's a fairly competent commercial solution that i've used called
"Activebar" from Data Dynamics -- you can find a demo version on the web at
http://www.datadynamics.com/.

There's nothing wrong with trying to do it yourself or relying on shareware,
but this is a fairly competent professional product that's worth a look.
