I am using Visual Basic Ver 5.0, Professional edition to produce
a GUI front end to a telephony system. The Visual Basic program
allows users to record messages using a microphone plugged
into the PC's sound card.

I need to produce mu-law format sound files as opposed to PCM files.
The Sound recorder can record mulaw WAV files but Visual basic seems
to only want to use PCM files.

I have written a program using the MMControl  tools, but when I change
the multimedia settings to mulaw in the control panel no recordings are
made.
If I change it back to PCM the program works fine.

Does any one have any ideas how to achieve this?
