 Barcodes-Scanners cabled to the ethernet

I read a lot in here about barcode scanners hooked up to serial or com
ports.  I need to cable the scanner to the Ethernet, not a PC.  Does anyone
know the hardware and software I will need to do it this way?  Do you know
of any ActiveX components that may help me out here?

This is totally uncharted territory for me.

Thank you all once again.

It's been my experience that a serial-to-ethernet converter of some
kind will be needed. These can be rather expensive (several hundred
dollars) but if you're working in an industrial or commercial
environment, they are well worth the money.

I've recently used a DeviceMaster from Comtrol that brings in 8 serial
connections via ethernet (stay away from their similar "Rocketport"
product). Lantronix also markets some serial-to-ethernet devices.
Also, check out B&B Electronic products.

I don't think you will find this hardware at all but even if you do I
am confident that it will be much cheaper to use a PC as the interface
between the device and the network. An adequate used PC will add less
than two hundred dollars to the price of a serial or keyboard wedge
scanner. The software on this PC to perform the transfer may be more
expensive but you can probably write it to make the software on the
"real" computer simpler and/or faster.

I was speaking to our sales guy from Datalogic the other day and he said
they are introducing a range of scanners that will directly link by RJ45. May
be worth enquiring at your local Datalogic sales office.
