HELP! $DIR under VB DOS cannot read a CD

We are making our own CDs for internal software distribution, and have
come across a problem we cannot understand. The latest version of our CD
will sometimes not be found by a $DIR command in the VB DOS install
program.
The CDs are read through the parallel port of the target machine. It
occurs whatever the CD drive or the PC (we have several of each), and
then totally randomly (works one time in three about). The CDs read fine
under Windows. Although one of the directory paths is too deep to read
with DOS directory commands, that path is not accessed in the beginning.

Any and all ideas will be welcome... (timing problems?? drivers????)
