Assuming your WinCE device has the storage and RAM required for the hefty VB runtime files, then sure it can. Of course, you do have to compile your VB app for the WinCE device. See [ http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/cetools/ppcsdk_color.asp ] and maybe [ http://www.microsoft.com/catalog/display.asp?site=763&subid=22&pg=1 ]. Just search around. Howard Henry Schlunder

The second one is an add-on for VB 6 (Pro or Enterprise), which runs close to $200, and would probably work just fine. The other looks like an add-on for the other way, which is Microsoft eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0, which is freely downloadable at http://www.*-*-*.com/ (provided you can handle a 304MB download), and claims to be a stand alone IDE for exactly what I want - except it won't run the emulator on 98 (but then, neither will the other one). Thanks. (My boss has {*filter*} envy over the handhelds that other store owners take to the bi-annual buying shows, with their complete inventory and sales history on a Palm. Sigh. Sure, they can do that, with one store and 20,000 SKUs. But we've got 10 stores with 40,000+ SKUs each, and the same information for all of 'em comes out to 72 meg with the search index, and Palms just don't come with that much RAM. So it's time to get a pocket PC of some sort, and do it right with a real database and a custom front end. Then he'll be King Of The Hill on the "geek up with the joneses" contest. At least I'll get to learn something new.) --

Compression? I heard Project Gutenberg had an interesting algorithm that worked quite well on plain text. You might also want to check out CASL http://www.*-*-*.com/ , Wince, and, at least for debugging purposes, Lose32, all at once. -- Joe Foster <mailto:jlfoster%40znet.com> Sacrament R2-45 < http://www.*-*-*.com/ ; WARNING: I cannot be held responsible for the above They're coming to because my cats have apparently learned to type. take me away, ha ha!

Actually, Access will do just fine, once I have a machine that can run the drivers for it. Which CE will. I'm not interested in learning a new language for a once in a lifetime project. --

What are you babbling about? You're going to have to learn a new language anyway, now that Microsoft has decreed that Access and Visual Basic are *not* where we want to go today, even if that new language says "Visual Basic 7.0" on the box. Indeed. Rather my point. Windows has reached its final form. No further development will be done. Terry Austin
