 reading bar code information using a laser scanner

Has anybody ever use one of those laser bar code reader in a visual
basic application ? I'm planning to develop an application that reads
bar code information using a laser scanner and also prints out bar
code label.
Anyone has any information on how to proceed , any SDK , etc?
