Using Progress Bar to track time while an event is being processed

Hi, I'm new to VB and I'd like to find out:
1) How do I keep track of time elapsed between the start of an event and
its end with a progress bar indicating the percentage completed? (eg.
like Netscape Nav.'s downloading form which has a progress bar to keep
track of time elapsed.

2) How can I can the pointer icon to an hourglass during this time?

3) How do I wrap a picture as a background in a form while enabling
frame, captions to appear transparent so that the picture can be seen?
