Help please with a simple problem I am sure for an experienced programmer

In my security program there are two keys in the registry which I cannot get
Windows to respond to when they are changed. The hide desktop key works in
HKLM or HKCU but changes to this key only take effect when the user logs in
again or the machine is restarted.

I can write and read values to the registry no bother but cannot find a way
of telling explorer to update the changes to the registry in this key

HKLM\software\microsoft\currentversion\policies\explorer\NoDeskTop 1 or 0

Other changes seem to have immediate effect. I am hoping that someone will
read this and tell me there is an API call or something like that - API
calls are largely unknown territory for me. Please help me if you can or
point me in a direction where I can get help.
Thanks in advance
Andrew.

This is my answer to your post:

WIndows, usually always require a reboot when changing system setting
via the registry. I say almost always. Some cases it doesn't.
