 Best version for school?

I am a teacher preparing to teach Visual Basic in our school.  What
version do you experts recommend?  I'd like to use VB version 6, but I'd
also like a reasonably priced version my students can get to use at
home.  Let me know if you have any ideas...

Thanks!

The Book "An Introduction To Programming Using Visual Basic 6.0"
(David Schneider, Prentice-Hall) is the text used by the courses in VB I'm
Taking.
The text includes a CD-ROM with the Working Model Edition of
VB6.  The Working Model Edition is basically the Learning Model
Edition without the online documentation, and it can't compile to .exe
files.  Otherwise it's fully functional, and your students will be able to
do their programming with it at home.  The text and book cost me $85
Canadian.  I'm not sure if Microsoft sells the Working Model Edition on
it's own, or if you have to buy it packaged with a textbook.
Alternatively, Students can buy the Professional Edition much more
cheaply than other users.  I just bought it for $135 Cdn and it would have
cost me over $700 Cdn if I hadn't been a student.

You can check out this text at

Hope this helps,

I purchased the Pro Edition from my school for +- $85.00 U.S.

If I were a dishonest and cheap programmer I'd use it for profit, but
I'm none of those so I just use it as it was intended - to get in
trouble then post my problem here!

You should look into Microsoft's academic pricing plan which provides
substantial discounts for qualified academic institutions and their
students. For example, Microsoft's estimated price for Visual Basic Pro 6.0
Professional Edition is $549.00, the academic price is $99.95.

Well, in your case the VB 5 or 6 Learning Edition would be very
interesting. Low price, reasonable functionality and a lot of tools for
learning the language quickly...

If you can get a hand on VB5 Learning Edition I would take that one,
since it's probably much cheaper but has the same basic functionality VB
6 has. Only some advanced programming functions and some controls have
changed. You can see the differences on Microsoft's Webpage.

Yes Deitel are very good.

I used "C How To Program" to learn C at university and I've heard their
VB ones are good also.
Are there any VB books as good as Ivor Horton's C++ books?

The course for which I'm a TA (Introduction to Computing with
Application to Business and Commerce) uses _Programming in Visual
Basic 6.0_ by Bradley and Millspaugh. The book is very good for
those who may have little to no programming experience, while
still retaining enough depth for those who may know a little more.

The particular edition we're using comes with the "Working Model"
edition of VB 6.0 on a CD. It's fairly complete, though it doesn't
include all of the docs (e.g., no MSDN stuff). I'd recommend a
full version of VB for the instructor if you don't already have
one, but this edition seemed to be fine for general student use.
Barnes and Noble (www.bn.com) has the softcover for $41.00, though
your textbook distributor may be able to get it cheaper.

If you have any questions about the book, feel free to drop me
an email.

My experience has been that the books that come with a VB compiler tend to
be the weakest books out there.  The book I use for my Visual Design and
Development class (where we use VB) is Peter Wright's Beginning Visual Basic
6 from WROX.  It is BY FAR the best explanation of VB I've ever found.  It
is a littlle quick on the easy stuff, but does a nice job of examples and
whys on the more difficult issues like classes, control creation and API.

You can get the Learning Edition of VB6, but it is a bit crippled (no
control creation for instance) and I think it's better to buy the academic
version of VB6 Professional.  That tends to run about $99 -- a little steep
for students maybe, but they can actually develop full programs with it.
