SAS used to be an acronym for Statistcal Analysis Software or something close. It isn't an acronym anymore, though it still refers to a statistical analysis software package. Its used for statistical analyses especially of large datasets and is available on a number of different operating systems. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Canada. :) Is it an alternative OS, like Linux? Or is it a programming language named after a place, like Java? :) -- ---------------------------------------------------------------

SAS - Canada SAS stands for "statistical analysis system". The SAS Institute's phone
number is 919-467-8000, in Cary, North Carolina. Orignially, soley a
data manipulation (SAS/BASE) and statistical analysis program (SAS/STAT),
SAS is now a broad-based system that includes Relational data Base
Mgt/SQL, Graphics, Quality Control, etc. Some of their products are:
SAS/ACCESS, SAS/AF, SAS/ASSIST, SAS/CALC, SAS/CONNECT, SAS/CPE, SAS/ETS,
SAS\FSP, SAS/GRAPH, SAS/IML, SAS/INSIGHT, SAS/NVISION, SAS/OR,
SAS/PH-clinical, SAS/QC, SAS/RTERM, SAS/SHARE, SAS/STAT and SAS/TOOLKIT.
SAS is written for variety of operating systems including AOS/VS, CMS,
MVS, OS/2, UNIX, PRIMOS, PC/DOS and VMS environments.

It should stand for "simply awful statistics"...check out systat or spss instead.
