Saving Excel spreadsheet with VB macro size increases

I have an excel spreadsheet with a (big) VB macro behind it that allows the
spreadsheet user to click a button to open a large file (simple fixed length
file but with 20 or so different record types and layouts) and place it into
cells in the spreadsheet in a formatted way. There are several other
controls to enable other things to be done but I dont think they're relevant
to this particular problem. If I click the button to open the file, (hence
formatting it into the spreadsheet), then delete the rows from the sheet,
when I then SAVE the spreadsheet it takes up twice the disk space, even
though the spreadsheet is (or appears to me to be) the same as before. Doing
it again sometimes increases the size even more (not always though). Does
anyone know why?

Thanks
