Crystal Reports vs VB reports in code

I see a lot of people posting to this newsgroup that have programming problems
with CR and so many clients that have other problems (compatability among
competing reports from various software, BUGS, etc.) my question is this:

WHY BOTHER with it.  I can and do generate reports al the time in VB.  You
know, get the data, print it out.  They are faster. I'm able to produce
complicated things that I dare say would frighten anyone trying it with CR. I
have NO compatability problems.  The user has few things to install, maintain,
worry about... The only bugs are MINE and are easily found and I can correct
them.

Yep I can do all sorts of fancy stuff, use proportional fonts AND get things
to right align, spacer lines, whatever is needed and even what is just wanted.

So why use CR.  Just because it exits doesn't mean it's useful, or that it is
the rational choice.

As a newbie, I've been puzzling over this - CR seems very complex. My
thought was to design a form and use it as a report, but this seems to be a
hell of a lot of duplicated work? How do you handle things like logos,
borders etc printing with code? I'd love to see an example of a code
generated report, as my gut feel says that's the way to go (if it can do
what I want to).

Thanks

John,

As a novice programmer I found that CR was rather enticing as it seemed to
simplify report generation. As I grow in my skills, howerver, I am quickly
seeing the limitations of CR. My problem is that I just haven't quite mastered
the art of report generation from raw code, I have downloaded VSView which
seems to make the task much easier but I still find myself lacking. Any
suggestions as to where I might find a good source that would help me increase
my ability to generate reports from code?

All ideas welcome.

Thanks :-)
