SQL Server slower than Jet, why???

i have a file server POS system running.  about 200,000 customers.  if
you put in Smith, it takes about 15 seconds to bring up a list (mostly
time to populate the list, probably) of the Smiths.  same screen on SQL
server 7 took 1 minute 45 seconds.  i thought SQL server was faster.
100 base network.  any ideas or words to explain this?
