Converting dBase III tables -> SQL databases

I have a friend who is trying to use VisualBasic v3 to convert a large
number of dBase III tables into SQL databases. The problem she is
having is with dBase III's "memo" field type -- she said SQL doesn't
have memo but "text field" is the equivalent, however when she tries
to open the dBase table using that she gets an error that the external
table is not in the expected format.

She has successfully modified a Clipper program to read the tables,
convert the memo fields to text fields, and write the result to a
file which VB can convert into an SQL database, but she would prefer
to do everything in one step and not require large amounts of disk
space for the temporary files. Does anyone know how to do it in VB
directly?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Cheers,
Jason.
