 VB4.0 32Bit Vs Oracle7 in Unix

Hi~ there

I am in a real deep trouble with VB4.0 32Bit Enterprise version. Is it true
that there is no ODBC driver available in market which can connect VB4.0
32Bit to oracle7 in unix machine?

I am real frustrated that now  VB4.0 only supports connection to oracle7 in
Windows NT machine.

If it is true, I guess I'd better find another tool like PowerBuilder or
Delphi.

Any comment or solution will be highly appreciated.

TIA for your help.

Best regards,

Tristan.

What makes you think VB cares where the server is? The issue to to get
a SQL*Net connection to the given server. The visigenic driver needs
to talk to SQL*Net - beyond that the server can be anywhere.

Microsoft KB article # Q140498 addresses how to get the visigenic
driver functioning...

No this is not true.  I spoke with both Oracle and Intersolv (Oracle sold
their ODBC business to Intersolv).  Intersolv has a 32-bit driver for
$99/license.  If you are going to distribute to 1000 or more users Intersolv
will give volume discounts and/or work with you on a discount scheme.

This is what I know at this point.  I am also looking for a Windows '95
compatible solution.  If you use the Visigenic solution, Oracle stated that
they will not support the implementation.  Also, Intersolv is not sure at this
point with the Multilink/VB product they acquired from Pioneer.  I talked with
one of their reps and they may be providing a 32-bit solution this year (??)
that may have royalty-free distribution (vaporware at this point).

Hi,

I am very interest in some response to this myself.  I am currently
trying to decide whether to put my main focus on VB 4.0 or C/C++
(Borland 5.0 or VC++).  If VB 4.0 has snags like this, not to mention
that it is still only object based and not object oriented like Delphi,
Powerbuilder and C++; I think I will place my emphasis elsewhere.  Good
luck to both of us!

I have also had success with the Visigenic Oracle ODBC driver.
It requires that SQL*NET 32-bit is up an running, however.
I was glad to see the MSKB article that the other fellow
referenced, as we have been doing "trial and error" installation
to get it to work....

One odd thing with the Visigenic driver (I posted a question
last week here).  I can't perform an async query, as it gives me
an ODBC error saying "Visigenic Driver Not Capable".  grrrrrrr.

Check out Intersolv's new 32-bit driver. 1-800-876-3101.  Haven't used it, but
am problably going to try it.

I have written and released two in house applications that both
use RDO and the Visigenic Oracle driver to access an Oracle DB
running on a Sparc Station.  There are some caveats, but overall
it works fine.  As several others have already pointed out, you
need SQL*Net.
