Access vs SQL Server vs Sybase vs Oracle

Hi all,
I am currently using Access2 on an NT server with
VB frontend, but find performance TERRIBLE. My
questions are 1) Is Access a problem and 2)If I
were to consider another backend database, which
would you suggest and why?

I know this is a pretty fundamental question, but
I'll bet there are lots of database newbies like me
surfing this group with the same question.

Thaks for you kind reponses :)

Dave

How slow is terrible?
How big is your db?
How many tables?
How many fields in each table?
How is the tables indexed?
How many simultaneous users?
How many transactions pr. minute?

Different flavors of databases have different weaknesses,
so we need an answer to most of the above before we can
help you...

Thanks for feedback!
Here's somemore info

Terrible=1 to 5 seconds to process a query
How big db: not very, only a few thousand records
tables: four
fields per table: ave=five
index: on key field only
simultanous users: of db, 2 or 3
Transaciton per min: transactions per day more
meaningful...maybe a couple dozen

As you can see, this database is SMALL. When I run
it on the local pc, works great. When I set it out
on the sever, yuk.
It seems that if such a small database runs so
slowly, a large one would not even function?

Am I going in the right direction looking for
alternatives to Access, or should I consider
performance enhancing techniques.

Thans Again

Dave
