 RealBasic speed

Hi all,

maybe one of the pros in this group can answer this - why is a RB
application so much faster under Windows? What can we do to speed it up for
Macs?

Thanks

Markus

P.S. System: 17in iMac, 512 MB, MacOS X 10.2.6, RealBasic 5.2fc2

Well, it's not because of the compiler (since I see you're using RB5);
the compiler is mostly identical for the two platforms now.  How are you
judging that it's faster?  Are you sure you're making a valid comparison?

I have observed a similar phenomenon.  In fact my RB5 program compiled
for Windows run twice as fast in Virtual PC 6 as it does in Mac OSX on
THE SAME MACINTOSH !!!.

I'm using the Ticks function to mesure time taken to generate and
display a maze.   I run the test 5 times and compute the average
results.  On Mac OSX I get an average 300 ticks and the windows
version only takes 150 ticks on average in VP6 running windows 2000.

Given that VPC on my PB667 is about equivalent to a 333Mhz pentium2
(at best), I can't imagine the speed difference you would get on a
real PC running at 600 Mhz or more

I have observed a similar behaviour with RB5.1

In fact, the speed difference is so great that my program runs two
times faster in Virtual PC 6 (win200) than it does in mac OSX (10.2.6)
on the same Macintosh (Powerbook G4 667 Mhz).

I use the ticks function to mesure the time taken to generate and
display a complex maze.

300 on average in OS X against only 150 in Windows 2000 emulated using
Virtual PC.

The difference is obvious enough that I didn't realy need to measure
it but this way is more objective.

What does the app do?
