 Database design question?

Hi all,

I'm currently wondering if I should use RealBasic for a little project I
have in mind, or whether I should use something like Filemaker for it.

The project involves about 2,000 items which have "overlapping" properties
(and which I find a pain in the neck to sort in Excel all the time to find
which ones are overlapping) e.g.

Item    property 1  Property 2  property 3
  1        A           100          4
  2        B            50          4
  3        C           100          2
  4        A            10          0

and I want it to for a selected item show me all the other items which share
a certain property.

I was thinking of a scrolling EditField listing all the items and clicking
on one item will show in another editfield all the items which share
property 1, in another editfield all the items which share property 2 etc

e.g. clicking on Item 1 will output 1, 4 in "shared property 1", 1,3 in
"shared property 2", and 1,2 in "shared property 3"

I have no experience yet with databases or dictionaries in RealBasic, so I'd
value your input as to how I should tackle this problem.

Thanks

Markus

P.S. System: 17in iMac, 512 MB, MacOS X 10.2.4, RealBasic 5.1

P.P.S. I know Excel isn't the best choice, but as in so many instances a
site-licence means it's "free" to use whereas I bought RealBasic myself.
Filemaker is probably out of my league, and as the solution needs to be
cross-platform (I work on a Mac in a PC environment) AppleWorks isn't an
option either ...

Markus:

It would take me about 5 minutes to build this in filemaker.  If you are
new to Filemaker, I think it might take you at most 15 minutes.

I'm serious.  If you choose Filemaker, and you want me to point you in the
right direction, feel free.
