Swap out when SHELLing with PB3.5 ?

Hi,

I need to free up memory when shelling and the only two functions I've
come across to do it are SWAPBAS (written for QB, but half works with
PB) and PBSWAP which works well, but doesn't use XMS :(
Are there any alternatives ? Ideally, I'd like to swap everything to
XMS.

Alan.

You might try SWAP.COM from Nico Mak ... I don't remember the link, but you
might try
CompuServe at user id 70056,241 or on BIX as Nico_Mak.

Also, check out Stefan Machwirth' Special Power. Try

Information Managment Systems had a highy regarded "swap" product for
PB/DOS. Although they recently discontinued most of the DOS product line,
you might get some info at http://www.infoms.com or via e-mail at

There's a commercial product, UltraShell, which does this for powerbasic 3.0
and later. It supports XMS, and has a few other features you might find
useful. Check it out at Information Management Systems, at
http://www.infoms.com.

I've looked at that in the past, but unless your experience is
different, it's my belief that it doesn't work with PB programs. Run
from a stand alone program it whinges about a hooked interrupt and if I
suppress that I get EMM386 errors. The same program run under the IDE
works fine though. I have the feeling that should have told me
something, but it didn't :(

Alan

It has worked well for me, and seldom caused a problem. I also use the
Special Power toolbox for the same purpose, using an environment variable to
determine which one to use.

Of course, when using such a product, you must be prepared for the problems
you have described.
