How to do another task while reading data from a sql server

I know this has been asked a million times, but how can you execute a task
while a recordset is being read......

The cleanest way in VB5 would be to have the data access routines contained
in an ActiveX EXE server (formerly called an OLE server) so it runs in its
own process space (thread) in Windows. When you first dimension this object
in the calling program (let's say it comes from a "GetData" class), use the
new WithEvents keyword (look that up in the help files):

Dim WithEvents m_GetDataObj as GetData

Then you can have your data access object raise an event when the recordset
is ready, and your main program will get an "interrupt" depending on how you
mechanized the event handler.
