I don't know what to think about this posting !  If I ask a question
and get one answer then I am greatful.  If I get flooded with answers
then I am "over the moon".  I don't think I would be SHOUTING SO
LOUDLY about the number of replies.

Another half a dozen and he might be able to spell PROCCER.

I have made a note that I will not answer any questions from the son
of Charlene just in case he gets too many answers.

Phil

Maybe I am just getting grumpy in my old age !  BTW ever tried to tell
somebody over the phone to press the back-slash.  I have had people
insist that their keyboard does not have one at all !

Hey, stay cool folks, remember Kenneth is young and just starting out with the
whole internet/programming buisness. He is unaware, like many people starting,
of proper netiquette and the time delays in getting replys from around the
world. He was also, until very recently, unaware of how to transfer mail
messages from Eudora into a QBASIC readable file, and had to type all the
examples out by hand.

I think he, and other people new to this whole buisness, would benefit from a
gentle reminder of good netiquette and some pointers to the various FAQ's
(rather than a "just read the FAQ reply"). Seasoned users forget just how
confusing the whole internet business is, and many things we take for granted
are just not obvious (like the very existence of FAQ's and netiquette, let
alone how to find them. How many here KNOW where the usenet FAQ's are
archived?). We also tend to forget how clueless WE were when starting out.

I know we get a lot of rubbish posted here by clueless dweeb's, but
reasonably polite requests from obvious new users should not be jumped on. We
do, after all, want to encourage enthusiastic BASIC users of all levels of
ability.

Cheers! Ian

REALLY good idea to leave caps lock OFF :-( (or even to FIND caps lock))

PS. If you are reading this Kenneth. Using all uppercase writing is considered
to be the email/net equivalent of shouting, and is considered bad manners.
There are a number of guidelines for posting to newsgroups. These are usually
posted to the newsgroup usenet.newusers at regular intervals. FAQ's are
Frequently Asked Questions, lists of which are regularly posted, and can also
be found in FTP archives (to which I have misplaced the address). The BASIC FAQ
is obtainable by email by posting to

I think the forthcomming Australian elections and the post-mundingburra hype
may be getting to you. It's certainly getting to me :-P

It doesn't even have to be over the phone, I've stood beside people who insist
that there is no such key, and are upset when you point it out. Then again, my
wife insists that the backslash is a FORWARD slash, and allways refers to it
as such, AND trys to correct me :-{.

Maybe its time for a cathartic "Idiot responses I have encountered" thread
(but just a short one ;-)

Cheers! Ian (Who thinks there should be a special medal for people who try and
teach their 73 year old mothers how to use a computer)

Most people can't find 'Sys rq' either... (Has ANYONE ever used that key, by
the way?)

You are not going to believe this but it is a true story....

In the days when AT 's were the top of the line computer.  My company
sold one only to have the customer phone in the next day with the sad
story that it was dead - Had not worked since he bought it !

It is plugged in ?
Is it switched on ?

Usual questions which gave the response "Do you think I am stupid"

50 K drive later I walked in and switched it on - It worked fine.
HOW DID YOU DO THAT ? he yelled looking for my magic wand.

Turns out he thought the keyboard lock on the front was to turn the
thing on and off - Never thought to look round the back for a power
switch.

Maybe it was his wife who brought back the 5 1/4 disks that did not
work and that were almost impossible to get out of the tight fitting
packages. (Hey I am not sure that this story is true !)

Good question, please tell me.

It's the lowercase version of the Print Screen button.
(shift-Sys Rq = the actual printscreen)

Most probably it means 'system request', but I haven't seen any programs
using it... Ever.

I tested it's scancode with my keyboard ISR.  If you press it without
shift, the screen blinks and nothing happens (would probably print the
screen if I had linked it to int 5).  If you press it with shift (or
practically any button like it), it returns a scancode of 55.

Well, there are noisey people, loud people and unpolite people
in this world, but my anxiety is no match for some of you.

I believe it was originally intended that it should be
used as a means of switching between tasks in a multi-
 tasking system.
