(Don't ask why.)  Is there a way of going this automatically?  If not,
I would like to hear suggestions of how to uniformly/manually treat
memory allocation in C to deal with BASIC's strings.

Alternatively (and equivalently), is there a BASIC compiler (for
_QuickBasic_) written in (gc)C?
