Gwbasic causes CAN NOT SHELL TO BASIC error

Help! When I run a set of programs written in gwbasic and run on some WIN95
machines I get the following error - "Can not shell to basic".

The trouble is that on some Win95 machines the same command works
correctly - on others it gives the error.  The machines with the exact same
config.sys and autoexec.bat and msdos.sys files will yield different
results.

When I shell to ms-dos and run the mem command the conventional memory usage
seems somewhat similar although there are some differernces.  With the
result being 607k available on one and 611k on the other.

Any help would be appreciated.

Compile your programs to a WIN95 compatible EXE.

Unfortunately that is not an option.  The powers that be have declared that
no changes should be made to the software itself.

Besides there should be an answer since it does run in WIN95 in some
environments.

See if the versions of Win 95 are the same on both machines.  I don't have
GW-BASIC (and I'm not currently using my own machine) but the version of
Window's I am using is 4.00.1111.  Maybe one of the versions you have is too
old.

Does 'set' mean more than one program?  If so, does one GWBASIC
program run another GWBASIC program?  If so, you may have a problem
with available memory, the DOS PATH, or even SHARE, depending on what
the programs do.  Where is GWBASIC installed? C:\DOS?
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND?
