 BASICA on a Pentium (MS-DOS 6.2)

My son has a computer class at school that's using BASICA (don't ask me
why).  He wants to run programs he's written and saved in BASICA format
(not ascii).  When I run BASICA.COM my computer locks up.  Any ideas?
Thanks
Walter

The file could be corrupted. Try re-installing the program or just copying
it over from the original disk.

Hi Walter!

1) BASICA.COM was written for the old TRUE BLUE IBM's. They had ROM's
onbaord that had the rest of the BASICA.COM stuff.

I THINK what you need is GW-BASIC. I think the last version of DOS
that it was included with DOS 5.x, I am not sure it will run under DOS
v6.x, but if you can locate some old DOS v5.0 disks, you could try it
under DOS 6.x.

2) There is a shareware BASIC like compielr called ASIC v5.0 that
offers a GW to ASIC converter as I recall. Not sure how great it is(I
have NEVER used BASICA much more than to tinker - QB v2.1 was my first
DOS based BASIC).

GWBASIC will indeed run under DOS 6.2.  So, for that matter, will QBASIC.

I said:

I should have then said, the ASCII version can almost
certainly be loaded and run in QBASIC, or other modern versions of BASIC.

The version of BASICA.COM included in early versions (I guess pre-3.3)
of PC-DOS require a BASIC ROM in your computer. However, a lot of IBM
compatibles don't have that piece of ROM.

Try to get a copy of GW-BASIC, which is quite compatible with BASICA and
doesn't require the BASIC ROM ...

  Hope this helps.

BASICA.COM was written for IBM computers only.  It requires Cassette BASIC
in ROM.  If you're using an IBM compatible (or even an IBM PC300 or later)
it won't run.  There are versions of GW-BASIC around that will run on
compatibles and will run virtually all BASICA programs.  If all else fails,
look on shareware.com for a program that will convert BASICA's packed
format to ASCII without the need for an interpreter.

Ed,
You're correct when you say he needs GWBasic. But the last DOS it came
with was 4.01. DOS 5 had the QBasic Interpreter.

I use ASIC 5.0 regularly. I was able to get Tom Hansen's IBRARY for ASIC
before he went out of the ShareWare business and the combination makes
ASIC a very nice Quick & Dirty  FAASSSTT compiler that produces very
small .COMs & .EXEs.

I can strongly recommend ASIC for any beginner who can't afford the
powerbasic products.

I USED to use ASIC, but have not used it much in the last year or so.
ANother nice lib is Doug Herr's ASILIB. It is absically his
QLIB/ASMLIB stuff in ASIC linkable/useable format, and he takes it a
bit further than Hanlin went. IE: FULL graphics command equiv for
primitives, all screen modes (Herc thru SVGA), graphjic GET and PUT,
etc.

Agreed. For a cheap/small compiler, it does a great job!

It will run in a DOS box under Win95 too -- so-called MS-DOS 7.0,
but really 6.22 with a couple of patches I'm assured.

Hmmm I have a Turbo C++ Book and I have seen a GW-BASIC Full written in the book for a user to
copy and use.
