Neat recursive menu program written in awk

Hi there.
I once saw a very efficient awk program. It generated a menu list which led
into other menu's /actions.
However:
The author didn't have to number the items in each of the menus
A new window was generated for each layer of menu
Items could be added to subtracted from the available menu from the menu
itself.

Best of all, the program was only a small number of lines.

In view of the usefulness of this type of program I wondered if it was
generally available as a standard type of 'hello world ' program or if
someone else had seen or has a similar program.

Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
