 Q: inverse of strftime

hello awkers,

does anyone have a *short* solution for the inverse
of strftime? i use awk for processing logfiles
and like to have a function like this

        convdate(char *any_format, char *any_date);

where convdate returns the elapsed seconds between some
epoch (say 1/1/1970 or so) and 'any_date' given in format
