 Yet another novice question

I know this type of question was posed in the alt newsgroup earlier,
but I didn't pay attention to the answers at that time...

The problem...

I want to process files and mail the results to people (for the EE Purity
Test...see .sig).  The files that I am processing have the recipient's
email address and I'm able to extract it.  I just don't know how to pass
the email address from the awk script to a Unix command (like "mail"
for example).

TIA!

Lets say youhave an awk script that extracts mailing addresses from files and
is called "get_user" and your file with the user name is called "scumbag"

Here's what to do:

Prompt#  awk -f get_user scumbag | mail - < love_letter
or
Prompt#  mail `awk -f get_user scumbag` < love_letter

        How about something like:

        {
        # whatever you're doing to get the address and prepare
        # your message.
        # put address in variable named 'address' and
        # message in a file named msgfile
        . . .
        mailcmd = "mail -s \"Your subject\" " address " < msgfile"
        system(mailcmd)
        }
