 gawk for Windows

I haven't been able to locate newer versions of gawk (3.0.5 and 3.0.6) for
Win95 or more generally Win32.
Gawk 3.0.4 was made available for Windows 95 (including a Windows help
file).

Does anyone have more information on this subject?

Berend,

It's not "Win32" (i.e., you have to run it in a DOS box under Win9x or
NT), but it does come with help (an "info" file).  DJGPP has released
a version of gawk 3.0.6 as of 8/17/2000.  See any simtel mirror:

Binary + info docs:
 ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/gnu/djgpp/v2gnu/gwk306b.zip

If you're not already set up for DJGPP, you should start at
www.delorie.com to get the DJGPP basics first.

HTH.

I don't think there is any supporting djgpp software required to enable
DJGPP gawk.exe to run in Dos under Windows. Am I wrong?

You do need some support to read info files though.

Yes, but you only get LFN support under 9x... under NT/2k, you're limited to
8.3 filenames.

Use mingw32... you get a smaller executable, too. :)

gawk 3.0.6 isn't hard at all to compile yourself... I picked up the mingw32
compiler suite and was up and running with the newer version in less than half
a hour.

Try it yourself.

Can you give me the "Quick Start" on that?

I found this site: http://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/~janjaap/mingw32/

and followed a link to an FTP site containing these files:

  binutils-2.9.1.zip            1.87 MB    29.12.1998  00:00:00
  diffutils-2.7.zip           130.13 kB    13.09.1998  00:00:00

  pdcurses-2.3.zip            166.87 kB    24.12.1998  00:00:00
  regex-0.12.zip              412.59 kB    20.09.1998  00:00:00
  sed-3.02.zip                 42.75 kB    20.09.1998  00:00:00
  slang-1.2.2.zip             367.10 kB    02.01.1999  00:00:00
  win32api-980701-4.zip       409.69 kB    24.12.1998  00:00:00
  zlib-1.1.3.zip

Which files do I need?  Is there a "Quick Start" or "Readme First" for this?

That works, but it's egcs 1.1, vs gcc 2.95.2... I used that until I found the
current version.  Go here:

http://www.mingw.org/

and get what you need.  Then follow the directions in the GAWK tarball for
compiling it under mingw... it's a defined target in the makefile.

Funny thing is that the executable was smaller under the older version of the
compiler.  Same optimizations both times, too.  Go figure.

Good luck!
