 Word 2000 SP1 - DOC/Template

I have a document (A.doc) based on a template (B.dot).

When I try to use 'Save as' on the A.doc
it defaults to save itself as a DOT-file and
the filetype combo is disabled - why ?

Because your document is really a template. Let Word save it as a template.
Create a new document from it (file > new) and save that one as a document.
Then delete the first.

A.DOC is NOT a template itself - it is a DOCUMENT made by
a dobble-click on the template B.DOT !

Whatever you think your document might be, Word knows better. Whether you
like it or not you have created a template and not a document. The fact that
it has a *.DOC filename is irrelevant. Why Word would have created a
template when you expected a document is another issue, and probably
concerned with Windows registration. You can reregister Word and fix the
file associations by typing Winword /r in the Windows start > run box.

You cannot save a template as a document. You can only save a document
created from the template

You should check for Word macro viruses.  Some of them force your
document to be a template.
