I've had Access 2000 and Access 97 installed on the same machine for many months with no problems. I've distributed apps in Access 97 runtime to people using Access 2.0 and Access 95, without messing up their full commercial installations. Besided, this is forward thinking, many months from now. I know I want to use 2000 because of some of the jet engine advances, particularly the record level locking...I am not sure my client will upgrade as fast as I do, however.
