Access 97 - Subform access triggers update for Main Form

I have a subform that I want to have midway through the tab order for the
main form, some data for the record for the main form is entered prior to
the subform, some after.  However, as soon as the subform is entered, the
record for the main form is updated which can cause errors if validation
checks fail on some of the fields for which data has not yet been entered.

I have another related problem which is how to perform a validation check
before the data is stored in the underlying table when the validation check
is dependent on the data having been entered for both the subform and the
bottom part of the main form. Using the event of BeforeUpdate doesn't work
since the Update occurs when entering the subform. If there were some way
to respond to the event of moving to the next record (in response to
clicking of the next record navigation button), that might help, but I
haven't figured out how to do this either.

Any suggestions around these problems would be appreciated!
